“I want to create a ranch where animals and nature live” Hata nomadic farm pig farm

Branded pigs in Hokkaido are becoming popular, and I have the impression that pig farming is popular in Hokkaido, but the number of pig production units in 2016 fell below 5% to a record high. However, the number of pigs raised remains the same as at the peak (* 1). Although the number of pigs released from the barn has decreased, the reason why the number of pigs has not changed much may be due to the increased size of the pig farm.

Large pig farms have a limited area of pig production per pig to make pigs more efficient. On the other hand, the method of fattening pigs called “grazing pigs” has an unlimited area of growth because pigs are raised on the farm.

This time, we interviewed Mr. Hiroshi Hata, representative of “Yukisha Hata Ranch”, a grazing pig farm in Hokkaido, about how to start and manage a herd of grazing pigs that are beginning to show signs of recovery. born. ..

After retirement, move from being a researcher to a pig breeder

Mr. Hata is conducting research on animal husbandry, in particular grazing, feeding, and the environment at Hokkaido University. After retiring as a professor at Shizunai Research Farm, Northern School of Biosphere Science Center, Hokkaido University, in June 2013, wishes to create a farm where animals and nature Living in Tokachi Tadashi, Hokkaido, came true and “Farm Yumakisha Hata” was established. I have launched it.

Mr. Hata chooses pigs as livestock animals on the farm because he believes that pigs with a short production cycle will be suitable for working in the second generation. Pigs can be shipped after 6 months. It is one third taller than Japanese beef, having a fattening time of 20 months.

With the initial thought that Mr. Hata started farming, “pig farming” began.

A small number of pigs are grazed in Japan

The grief-stricken pigs began to get serious in Britain in the 1950s. It is said that modern pig farming, costly due to capital investment and manure handling, has rapidly grown and spread since the second half of the year. 1980 after efforts to use existing farmland and pastures to raise pigs and improve livestock technology. I’m.

Since grazing pigs require extensive land, domestic pigs are the mainstream in Japan, but recently, the number of pig farmers raising grass-fed pigs is increasing.

The pigs at “Yusashisha Hata Ranch” are called “play” because they eat well, sleep well, play well and live a stress-free lifestyle, and were raised freely under Mr. Hata. ..

Choose a suitable pig breeding site and pig type

The reason for opening a farm in Nakagawa-gun, Hokkaido, located in the Tokachi Plain, is because it is easy to obtain land with a scale that allows pig grazing. And we were able to buy enough “abundant dairy and farm by-products” to feed pigs. The Tokachi Plain, which has the longest sun and autumn in Hokkaido, is a suitable area for grazing livestock, and it’s no wonder that different livestock farming is done in addition to pig farming.

Pig herd at the time of establishment was 6, now it has increased to 44. Initially, the purchase of piglets for fattening from livestock farms and fattening pigs as a means of scaling up, but now we have also begun efforts to raise self-raising.

From breeding to fattening requires more careful management, but the breeder’s personality and emotions are clearly shown in the pig. Mr. Hata himself gave birth to one calf each in early July and late September, and the integrated pig farming system will start in earnest.

Food is suitable for grazing pigs

In general pig production, in order to aim for soft meat quality and rapid growth, complete feed consisting mainly of imported cereals is provided, but Mr. Hata aims to raise pigs with initial characteristic value. of the pig and fed according to his own ideas. I am choosing.

“More than half of the grain consumed in Japan is used as animal feed. A lot of effort is being focused on efficiently creating delicious meat by providing what humans should eat. However, pets were initially bred with food that humans cannot eat or leftovers, and have demonstrated the ability to create pet products that are useful for humans.

Mr. Hata supplies pigs with dairy by-products such as whey produced at a nearby cheese factory and cultivated in upland areas in Tokachi such as potatoes, wheat, soybeans, lily roots and potatoes, Items deemed not to be transported to humans. .. In addition, these foods create a great taste of lean meat, have a low melting point and dissolve quickly in the mouth.

Pig raising is suitable for grazing pigs

Play is a longer way to grow older than a normal pig. Ordinary pigs 6 months old weigh about 115 kg, but it takes more than 12 months to grow up about 200 kg so the meat has a rich, ripe taste.

Additionally, Tokachi has the least amount of snowfall in Hokkaido, so you can grow up playing on grazing grounds all year round by going back and forth between a warm hay-lined hut and a farm.

The rigors of pig farming overcame with the cooperation of the strongest partner and the community

Mr. Hata, the farm’s general manager, said: “Mr. Hata has not been able to withstand the rigors of pig farming for about three months since the start of the farm and has given up on pig farming. This is Yukiko Nakachi.

To continue raising pigs freely, not only pigs but also need to be proactive and comprehensive in distribution and sales. However, there are limits to privately run farms. Help each other have farmers in the same area.

Next time, we will ask Mr. Nakachi about the reality and efforts of Hata Farm that we have seen since the start of pig grazing, at “Farm Journey: Tokachi, Hokkaido” farm, Pig transfer does not require stress “. I will.
