Rover Opportunity broke Lunohod’s record

The vehicle of the American space agency NASA on Mars, Opportunity, has covered a greater distance than any other vehicle on any celestial body, NASA announced today.

Since being on Mars, the rover has traveled 40 kilometers via solar energy. It broke the record held so far by the robot Lunohod 2, which the Soviet Union launched on the Moon in 1973.

According to the United States, the Moonwalker covered 39 kilometers in less than a month. “Opportunity has crossed more times than any other vehicle on the surface of a celestial body,” said NASA representative John Callas, adding that this is exceptional because the vehicle is not designed to cross long distances.

The Opportunity, which landed on Mars in 2004 initially on a three-month mission, is still exploring the surface of Mars. In addition to Opportunity, since 2012, the surface of Mars has been examined by the robotic vehicle Curiosity, which has covered 8.6 kilometers so far.
