This will not fail! Experts teach how to grow potatoes – Introduction to big potato growing tips

Owner of “Hyakka no Sato”, an experience farming farm in Nerima-ku, Tokyo. Farmers coach Tokyo. Vegetable sommelier (base). After working for a private company until the age of 34, he took over the family farming. In 2005, it opened “Hyakka no Sato” and currently has 150 members. We continue to convey to the masses the secret to making jelly and how to eat delicious jelly. In NHK’s hobby of horticultural “Yasai no Jikan”, he was in charge of farming management from the beginning of the program, and later as an instructor. His books include “How to Make Delicate Vegetables in Kato Style”.

An important task in determining the size of a potato, “sprout”

About 3-4 weeks after planting, the shoots that grow from Taneimo appear on the ground. When the height grows to about 15 to 25 cm, “sprouting” is done to reduce the number of shoots per plant. The larger the number of shoots, the more the potato will produce, but the nutrients are dispersed, so the size of each potato is smaller. In order for the potato to grow large, you must reduce the number of shoots.

“If you want to harvest L size potatoes (150-250 grams, about 7-9 cm) leave 2 buds, if you want to harvest L size potatoes (250-350 grams, about 12-15 cm) then leaving only one bud. Please pluck the other shoots. “

Select the remaining buds. Choose one with a thick, dark, strong body that is free from pests and diseases.

Note that if you judge the number of shoots from the number of stalks on the surface of the earth, you may accidentally pull all the shoots out. Even if it looks like multiple trees, it can be detached from a single shoot above the ground. Please check it properly in the next section (2).

The right stem, which appears to be two aboveground plants, is actually a single bud separated from one bud. If you pull it out without checking it, all the sprout that have grown will disappear …

Put your finger on the ground and check the correct number of shoots. Also, avoid the soil a little and shake each branch one by one. If the other stems are also swaying, that is evidence that they are growing from the same bud.

After deciding which buds to leave, pluck the unnecessary buds while holding the base of the plant with your hands so that the shoots don’t come apart.

Keep the stock steady and remove unnecessary shoots

After the plant has sprouted, add fertilizer and “gather soil”. Make the soil more often

Wear clothes

For the potatoes to grow, add 30 grams of organic compound fertilizer (see the first section, “Finally growing taneimo in the field!”) Between strains.

Land collection

When exposed to light, potatoes turn green and produce the poison solanin. To prevent the potatoes from being dried and sun-dried, and avoid stagnant water at the base of the warehouse, we proceed to gather soil.

To avoid cutting the underground roots and stems with mulberry trees, shovel the soil 70 cm or more from the tree and plant it. Be aware that if you pile up large piles of soil at the same time, it would be meaningless to grow upland.

Soil collection is repeated not only after the plant has sprouted, but also every 1 to 2 weeks until harvest.

It’s time to finally harvest! I also learned how to preserve good food

When leaves and stems start to die is the best harvest time (late May to before the end of the rainy season for spring, late November to December for autumn). You can eat it even after it’s completely wilted, but the larger the tuber, the more “su” will come in and will be empty, so it’s best when the leaves turn yellow.

Harvesting takes place on good weather days for several days. Forced harvesting when the soil is wet will cause mold to grow, potatoes spoil, bacteria to invade and easy to spoil. Ideally after 3pm on a sunny day. Be aware that potatoes after digging up will heat up in the sun, so if digged too early, heat will build up and rot easily.

Do a test dig to see if it has grown to full size. If it is still small, don’t dig into it and wait for it to grow.

If the potato is still small, wait for it to grow

Hold the warehouse in your hand and dig the potatoes. Some of the potatoes are still in the ground, so search by hand and dig them all up.

Remove the roots and stems of potatoes. Potatoes that are smaller than a 500 yen ball are high in solanin, so throw them out without eating them.

Wipe off the soil and let it dry gently for about 1 hour. This is because microorganisms and bacteria are still attached to when the sludge is attached. Just because you want to clean the soil, washing with water is completely NG. Please wash it right before eating.

Preservation and ripening

Place the harvested potatoes in a basket and store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place. Not only sunlight but also fluorescent lights will turn green, so cover them with screens.

“It should also be preserved for 10 to 14 days to ripen, the newly harvested potato is of course delicious, but when ripe, the starch contained in the potato turns into sugar, the sweetness increases. You can enjoy another taste again. “

We asked Masaaki Kato, a vegetable growing expert, to teach us how to grow potatoes that grow big. He also gave me details on the points that beginners can easily overcome, so check out this article and try making potatoes!
